The Golden Vise Award

Annual Award for Fly Tyers 

The Golden Vise Award is presented each year to the top Fly Tyer in the state. While the award is not based upon technical proficiency, that is - judges do not come from a line up of fly tying professionals around the county - it is taken very seriously. Unlike other awards, this is a people's choice award.  That is, people go to a poll taking web site and pick the tyer that they think is the best. 

Since this is a people's choice it is the customers of fly tyers who nominate their favorite fly tyer by going to a poll taking web site and filling out five questions:
  1. First and last name
  2. Telephone number*
  3. City where they live
  4. Pattern that the tyer is best know for
  5. How did the person filling out the form hear about The Golden Vise Award?
The whole process takes less than a minute and at the end of the form, the submitter is told that the process consists of two parts.  Part one is the gathering of the names of Fly Tyers across the state.   Part one will decide the top place finisher in each of four areas of the state; Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest.  Part two is down to the final four where the winner is choosen along with the three 2nd place award winners.  Each submitter is asked to give their e-mail address so they can be contacted for the second part and the final vote. 

The guy over at www.montanaflyfishingtips.com will tally up the results for this years' Montana Golden Vise Award part one and notify the four semifinalists of the decision.  The second part of the poll will last one month and the winner will be contacted by telephone to notify them that they have won the award.  The other purpose of the phone number is to set up a conference call with the winner.  The conference call will be open to the public and people can call in and listen to the call as the interviewer finds out about the winner, patterns they like to do best, which ones they find most difficult or challenging, how long they have been tying flies, what is the one tool they could not live without, etc.  The conference call will take about 60 minutes.  The call will be made available on an MP3 file at the completion of the call and will be placed online.
